I stare at the charred remains of my phone on my desk with a scowl. There's hardly anything left of it. That's not the worst of it though. My truck, plus the number Sully wrote down for me, is also long gone, both having been torched by the rogues during their attack. I had the number tucked inside my luggage, which was obviously inside my truck.
I can acquire a new phone and have Milo in our tech department at Grey Wolf download my contacts to a new device as soon as Carla gets it to me. This is one of the reasons why I hate technology. I hate fucking waiting.
Fortunately for me, numbers stick in my brain fairly easily, and I've already tried calling her phone multiple times from the landline in my office. Her phone went straight to voicemail, and I'm pissed. I thought we had an agreement. I thought she would have at least called me back by now.
Her classes would have been over long ago and there was no reason for her to ignore me like this. I don't know enough about her â regrettably â to know if she has a job or extracurricular activities after classes that could be keeping her from calling me, but still, couldn't she have found time to answer or at least text me back?
If we didn't have such a threat plaguing our borders right now, I would have hightailed it back to Lakeview hours ago but as it stands, we're currently on lockdown and my goddamn truck is a crispy pile of ash.
Whatever reason she has for not answering, I'm beyond fuming. My sparring session with Eli a little while ago was brutal but certainly needed, despite the workout we had while dealing with the rogues this morning. My anger got the better of me today, and Eli used that to his advantage every fucking chance he got. He got in some damn good hits, as if he was working out his own anger and frustrations, and I know I'm going to be sporting a few sore spots for the next few days.
But it wasn't enough.
Since finding her, I haven't been able to stop thinking about her. How often do mates have to leave the other behind like this? The second I can ensure the security of our borders I will be heading back to Lakeview. My gut twists angrily again. I know something isn't right and it isn't just because I haven't been able to get a hold of her, although that's a huge part.
Eli knocks on my office door even though he doesn't have to. He's just doing it to annoy me. I heard him coming when he was down the hall. He leans the bulk of his body against the door frame and stuffs his hands into the front pockets of his jeans. The button-up shirt he's wearing is open over a white T-shirt. His hair is still damp and spiked, telling me heâs run his hands through it a few times in frustration even after he showered.
